Overview
The exhibition Stars and Granite (Sterne und Granit), designed by Sabine Moritz for the Kunsthalle Rostock, is her first solo exhibition by an institution in East Germany. This is exciting because Sabine Moritz's biography also begins there. She was born in Quedlinburg and grew up in Jena-Lobeda. She not only experienced the ambivalence of the real DDR, but shaped components of her artistic oeuvre.
The exhibition Stars and Granite, the name of which is made up of two picture titles, shows examples from various groups of works that have been created since 1991. Traces of the past live in her depictions of events from the 20th century in Germany, which accompany her own life like shadows. It is not about history painting, in which rather heroic events are depicted, but the focus is on incidental scenes that steer thoughts in other paths. The image templates come from books, newspapers or your own photos. The works show a piece of truth without directly imitating reality.
Sabine Moritz moves in a spectrum of motifs and painting styles, so that the change between figurative and abstract painting is harmonious and coherent. You can see a selection of still lifes, depictions of landscapes and people, as well as new, abstract works that are being presented for the first time in the Kunsthalle Rostock.
