Overview

The donors were particularly interested in the "École de Paris" or "Paris School", which refers to French and international artists who lived in the area around Montparnasse in the first half of the 20th century. In his time, artists such as Henri Matisse, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Jean Dubuffet broke with their predecessors. They used art to challenge authorities and change the adopted aesthetic norms of their time. Young artists keep a collection alive and create dynamics between earlier eras and aesthetic ideals.

In this exhibition, we therefore also present a selection of contemporary artists, who have either been purchased for the collection or have been invited to think actively about Henie and Onstad's original gift: Ragna Bley, Anna Daniell, Pedro Gómez-Egaña, Marianne Heier, Siri Hjorth , Sebastian Makonnen Kjølaas, Herman Mbamba, Germain Ngoma and Jorunn Hancke Øgstad.

The showdown between the older masters and contemporary artists in this exhibition raises several issues: Among other things, the lack of female artists in the original art gift and the museum's role in the present as both a retrospective and far-sighted institution.
