Manuel Mathieu receives major public art commission as part of Montréal public transit project
Manuel Mathieu has been invited to create a major public artwork that will run through the Edouard-Montpetit REM station in Montréal, Canada.
As part of REM’s UniR art programme, five large mosaic panels by the artist will be installed in the station’s long corridor-mezzanine. Titled ‘Le mont habité / The inhabited mountain’ – in reference to the station's siting inside the Mont Royal mountain – the project will be unveiled in 2024.
Manuel explains that the mosaics “will be of idyllic surroundings; a marriage of painting, watercolour and collage. They will refer to the memory fragments of the landscapes left outside the station, left on the surface. The elements contributing to this new environment will become the landscape of our minds and will eventually exist in our imaginations.”
