‘The women in Ella Walker’s paintings are both ancient and modern, strange and familiar. While one woman’s bouffant is 1960s chic, others wear wimples. A hand placed on a jutting hip feels very mid-century, the stance of a pin-up or chorus girl. Clown-face paint and Harlequin patterns suggest the stock characters of commedia dell’arte. There are famous faces from old movies and the generic faces of medieval church statuary. Some hint at performance of different kinds. A smile is full of inscrutable meaning, as if frozen mid-scene. An open mouth might be singing or shouting. Others ignore their viewers, self-possessed.’ – Skye Sherwin
