‘The cattle, standing behind Mary’s studio, had an excellent view of the paintings in progress. Through the window, the building – a former barn – became a vitrine, displaying large upright canvases, each covered in a wash of some loose, tender colour: a liquid blue, a tawny brown, a bright, juvenile neon yellow. Every canvas bore some parts that were hardly worked at all, and other areas that had been more intensively painted. One long painting, lying landscape at the end of the room, was pale from end to end.’– Daisy Hildyard
