Inspired by ancient Egyptian poems, Greek mythology and manga, the illustrated artist’s book chronicles the adventures of Aqua and Marina, sisters and huntresses warring against a large Nile crocodile, Crocovelus Niloticus. Drawn entirely with pencils, watercolours, oils and gold leaf, Mitsola’s epic is illustrated with humour and gusto. The artist’s contemporary myth – or, as she calls it, a ‘pseudomyth’ – about sisterly love and vengeance plays with gender hierarchies, power structures, and the delicate equilbrium of the natural world.
