‘Bottrop reinvents his marks according to the needs of his materials. The artist’s recent discovery of copper mesh as a substrate has spurred an arrival of strategies that utilise its reflective and translucent properties, as well as the compounding of media, from oil stick to spray paint and paper stencils. Throughout his new works, Bottrop’s language has become contorted and redefined, offering a new experience for the viewer. While the use of copper bears a cheeky sentiment towards the material’s ubiquity and conductivity, its primary purpose seems to be the extension of Bottrop’s skills as a mark-maker into new terrain.’ – Grant Tyler
